That's what I do

My ride is about 3.6 miles each way, and I work nights. So I just wear my work clothes as my riding clothes. I have a velcro strap for my right leg.

For winter riding, I start adding layers. I ride roasty-toasty all winter long!

how to avoid spandex...

If your ride is fairly short or your job low-profile, you might consider the barebones approach to commuting apparel: your work clothes. Just be sure to wrap something around your right pants leg to keep it out of the chain (eg bandana, velcro strap, rubber bands).
