Matthews to Uptown

Routes
BOA is having a commuter challenge. I would like to commute during rush hours from Pleasant Plains/Weddington light to Seventh Street Station. Any suggestions on routes and places uptown to shower for free.

Thanks

Mathews to uptown

I commute from Rama road near providence day school. I take back roads between Rama and Sharon Amity. I then take Sahron Amity for about a half mile until I can connect with Fernclif. Fernclif connects with Colony near Myers Park High school. Then I ride Colony to back roads passed MP country club onto Queens RD west. QRW to East and then Dilworth to Mcdowell. From here, you can get just about anywhere uptown. I turn left onto second and then to Wachovia.

Matthews to uptown

I've tried a variety of routes, and so far, the best for me has been going straight up Monroe Road. I can go from Stallings to downtown in 65 minutes. Monroe is better than Randolph, because the road is wider and there is about a foot between the white line (on the right side of the road) and the sidewalk. There are also several places where you can ride on the sidewalk safely. The speed limit is also 35 about a third of the way out of downtown going south.

good luck!

Matthews to Uptown

I took a stab at a route from my house in Matthews to the Uptown Y (where I will shower and leave my bike) that may be good. I saved it in mapmyrun which is a pretty cool route design tool if you haven't heard of it:

If anyone could give some feedback on some alternative roads along the way I would be all ears.

Uptown Y parking crowded.

The bike rack in the garage below the Uptown Y is probably the only nearly full bike parking facility Uptown. Perhaps we should encourage the Y to get their landlord to expand it. If you have a low-cost bike you could try on-sidewalk parking with a really good lock.

Did you find a good route?

Did you end up finding a good route? I am also looking to make the trip from Matthews to uptown. I can't bring my bike to work so I am hoping the bike parking by the Y actually has room for me to leave my bike there.

Uptown Y Free Showers for Bike!Charlotte Commuters

The Uptown Y (now Childress-Klein YMCA, located on the 2nd floor of the Wachovia headquarters building) also offers free showers to bike commuters during Bike!Charlotte. This location is very convenient to most Uptown office buildings and has bike parking in its parking garage. Enter from 2nd street and go toward the back of the garage. (This bike parking facility is very crowded. If you work close by, it may be more convenient to park your bike there and walk to the Y.)

Free Showers + routes

The gateway YMCA is offering free showers to bike commuters during the challenge.

As for routes, you might check out the route from Rama Woods in the Forum for starters. Also, the volunteers who run this website can put you in touch with people who commute from your area who can suggest routes.
