Best places to live for a 10 - 20 mile commute (each way)

General Topics
Hi everyone,

I posted a similar question, what looks like over a year ago now, I'm on track to move down in the spring, I just want to make sure I have the location correct.

My office is located right on Tryon St. downtown. From my last post is sounded like I should be looking for housing south, south west, or west, to have the best access by bike. It sounded like along the Little Sugar Creek would be ideal, both commuter rail and bike path.

Any big disadvantages to these locations? I'm looking for a middle income neighborhood, hopefully someplace growing. I assume the real estate person will know the area, but you never know.

Thank you.

Try Southeast Charlotte/Matthews

I work in downtown Charlotte, and have biked all the way in from the dealership for my van to work and back before. The dealership is in Matthews, resulting in a total commute of about 14 miles. The route passes through the neighborhoods bounded by Rama Rd, Sardis Rd, Monroe Rd, and North Sardis Rd. Although they are not laid out on a grid, there is great connectivity between these neighborhoods. I have plotted a route from the dealership to downtown on bikely.com that might be helpful in seeing how I do it. Here is the url: Liberty GMC to Panthers Stadium

South Charlotte Commute area

My friend lives in Starmount and it certainly has a lot going for it with the light rail proximity. Little Sugar Creek Greenway is being built, but will not realistically connect to downtown for several years...but possibilities exist for wiggling on up to uptown through neighborhoods, but may be a 10 mile + commute. But the price there is certainly right today, and bound to increase when the rail opens.

Lots of options from uptown to South Park area, but only if you can afford it. There are a few good transitional areas down there, one of which is Wilmore - which is just west of the financially restricted Dilworth area on West/east Blvd and close to the rail line.

I bike the south Charlotte area a lot - let me know if you need a tour to help you decide.

South Charlotte commute area

Have you looked at the Starmount neighborhood of South Blvd near Arrowood Rd.? Has direct access to the Little Sugar Creek greenway route and light rail access. There is also a neigborhood on the east side of the creek that might be a possibility. And other neighborhoods going north along the S. Blvd corridor would have similar access. In fact, you can almost get directly to downtown from this area without ever having to bike on a major thoroughfare.
