Blakeney to Steel Creek area

I live near Blakeney (Rea Rd. and Ardrey Kell) and work just off of Hwy. 160 and Westinghouse (very close to Gita Bike). I would really like to commute by bike or a combination of bike and bus but so far have not been able to figure out a safe route. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ballantyne to Uptown (avoiding Rea's single lane)

Hi all,

I've finally moved to Charlotte and I'm renting at the corner of Lancaster and Ballanytyne Commons Pkwy. I have found a good route to get around the bottle neck at Rea, and connect to Colony.

Morning into Town:

Ballanytyne Commons Pkwy to Rea
Rea to Bevington
Weave through back roads to Willow Point
Willow Point into the Arboretum Mall
At the light Cross onto Arboretum View
At the end of Arboretum View you can connect to Bon-Rea
Quick right onto Swans Run Rd
Left onto Rea
Right onto Windyrush Rd
Left onto Abbottswood Dr
Right onto Colony

Afternoon out of Town:

Need route from WT Harris & Old Statesville to Uptown

I have tried this route:

Old Statesville

Left on Statesville (cross over I-85)

Right on Graham

Old Statesville has a bike lane, which is well marked and has more than a couple of the cyclist icons who have lost their heads!

Portions of Statesville are narrow. While the school buses and trucks were patient enough, I was wondering if anyone has found a better route?

One possibility for me is to wend more northerly, and pick up the greenway at Mallard Creek. But others posting have noted the fast traffic north of I-85.

Thanks for your advice.

Need Route from Robinson Church to Central Ave

I am new to cycling around Charlotte and I need a safe route. I live in Bradfield Farms (exit 39 off 485) and work on Independence across from the Cricket Arena. I am trying to avoid SHARON AMITY in the morning and afternoon. I would also like to avoid Harrisburg if possible. I think I can ride up Reedy Creek and make a left that will bring me out on Robinson Church. If someone can just help me get past Sharon Amity I think I might give it a go one day.

My current route would be
Harrisburg Road
Right onto Robinson Church
Left onto Market St.
Right onto Hickory Grove Road
Then the section I want to avoid Merge onto Sharon Amity

bear left at the fork (still on parkton)
RT onto Harrisburg Rd
LT onto Pence RD (after maybe 1/4 mile)
(Pence RD has a good bike lane on it)
Cross over Harris Blvd onto Hickory Grove Rd (this is a busy Rd but has a real good bike lane)

Mallard Creek Greenway

Great news for bike commuters in the University City area! The extention to the Mallard Creek Greenway should be completed during the next few weeks. This is especially wonderful for people riding to the UNC-Charlotte campus from the neighborhoods to the north and west. Previously, this commute was very hazardous as the campus is blocked off by many four-lane highways. Soon, one will be able to cruise through a leafy green corridor along the creek and tunnel under Highways 29 and I85.

One problem is that the greenway does not connect directly to the campus but ends at the playing fields on Mallard Creek Church Rd. near Hwy 29, so you must ride up the hill on Mallard Creek Church Rd. to Mary Alexander Rd. and to the rear entrance of the campus. The planning office for the University informed me that there are plans to build a greenway along Toby Creek and a bridge at its intersection with Mallard Creek, but construction won't begin until about Spring 2007. This would provide an even more direct route to campus with no hills at all!

Great Website for plotting routes

I have found that this website that uses Google maps is fantastic for plotting routes.

http://www.sueandpaul.com/gmapPedometer/

As an example here is my ride from Sherwood Forest to Gateway Village.

http://tinyurl.com/br2mg

You can switch between the Hybrid view and the "Map" view in the right hand corner of the map screen.

Note. you can drag the screen like a pdf.
Skybrook to Uptown Charlotte

Good afternoon everyone!!!! One of my fellow Toastmasters gave a speech on commuting to work via bicycle and he supplied us with this web site.

Commuting by bike is certainly going to be in my plans...though probably in the Spring when it stays light longer. At that time I will be residing at Skybrook near the Huntersville, Cabarus County line. What would be a good bike route for me to take?

Thanks,
